This paper attempts a review of the Nigerian National Policy on Education, in the context of the overall philosophy of the Nigerian national life as reflected in the objectives of Social Studies – a subject in the Nigerian Junior Secondary Social Studies curriculum. Its main objective is to make justification for the teaching of the subject -matter of HIV/AIDS as an emerging national problem in the school, and to provide some paradigm by which its learning content could be taught, using Social Studies as a carrier subject. The paper thus reviews policy provisions and philosophical background to Social Studies teaching, and provides some guidelines by which curriculum developers could design relevant content-valid curricula; and also provides a possible guide to classroom teachers in planning and implementing teaching plans. It also suggests some ideas that are likely to guide and facilitate the development of textbooks that may integrate the learning content of HIV/AIDS within the Social Studies curriculum.

Key words: Policy, philosophy, pedagogical initiative, HIV/AIDS’ education, Nigerian Secondary School, Social Studies.

This study investigated the use of Management Information Systems (MIS) in decision-making on long-term planning, short- term planning and budgeting in the South-West Nigerian Universities. The study used the descriptive research design of the survey type. Data were collected from a sample of 600 subjects consisting of 400 academic staff holding administrative staff positions and 200 senior administrative staff heading units using stratified random sampling technique. Data collected were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, means, standard deviation and t-test statistics. The three hypotheses generated were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study revealed that MIS was not adequately used in decision making process on long-term planning, short-term planning and budgeting. There was no significant difference between Federal and State universities in terms of the use of MIS for decision making on both long and short term planning. There was significant difference in the use of MIS for decision making on budgeting between Federal and State universities in favour of the Federal universities. It was recommended that the MIS units should be adequately financed and maintained to ensure a free flow of information and adequate use of MIS in decision-making on short-term and long-term planning as well as budgeting.

Abstract: The study examined the influence of class size pressure on the quality of work performed by secondary school teachers in Cross River State, Nigeria. The design adopted for the study was Ex-post Facto. One research question and one hypothesis were formulated to guide the study. Two sets of researchers developed instruments named class size pressure questionnaire (C.S.P.Q) and Teachers’ Work Quality Questionnaire (T.W.Q.Q) were responded to by teachers and students respectively after being validated. The C. S. P. Q with items on class size which were categorized into four Viz: below 30, 31-40, 41-50 and 51 and above were administered to 500 teachers while the T.W.Q.Q consisting of 18 items were responded to by 2000 students randomly selected through stratified random sampling technique. The data were analyzed using one way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The major finding of the study revealed a significant influence of class size on teachers’ work quality. Based on the findings it was recommended that government should build more classrooms and employ more qualified teaches so as to reduce students’ class population and reduce teachers’ work load. In this way, teachers’ work quality will be enhanced. Keywords: Teachers, Secondary School, Pressure, Class size, Cross river state, Nigeria.[...] Read More.

Abstract: The objective of the paper is to look into the current syllabus of the SSS geography and identify for attention, modules, topics and other items that must change in the face of global warming. The SSS geography syllabuses were reviewed. Subject teachers and examiners were interviewed on the scope, content and what must change in the face of global warming. There were some discussions with teachers of Geography. Climate elements, vegetation, ecosystems and niches, agricultural practices, crop yields, rivers and their seasonality behaviour, animal rearing and management, human behaviour and others call for attention in the syllabus. There were some radical departures from the details found in texts and examined, and the actual. The syllabuses must identify with those salient aspects of the subject whose specific content need to be modified and/or changed and adjusted for teaching and learning. Elaborate environmental education is suggested. Keywords: Global warming, climate change, senior secondary school, geography, Nigeria.[...] Read More.

Abstract: Education is key to a bright future for all global citizens. Many developing countries are severely challenged by a vicious cycle of food insecurity, poverty and under-education. The route out of this so-called poverty trap lies in multiple strategies for poverty reduction, whereby interconnected problems are tackled simultaneously. Promoting access to relevant, sound foundation education is a good place to start. This is because more than 70 percent of the world’s poor are found in rural areas where hunger, literacy and low school achievement are common. Education for a large number of people in rural areas is crucial for achieving sustainable food security, poverty reduction and rural development. Poverty education strategies that emphasize skills acquisition, especially, agricultural skills need be put in place for rural and urban dwellers targeting children, youths and adults alike. This paper thus argues that increased investment in education is critical for speeding up improvements in food security. Education in rural and urban areas, improves farmers, ability to implement more advanced technologies and techniques for crop management. Education also improves rural residents’ ability to find more profitable off-farm employment, boosting household income. Sound foundation education, especially in Nigeria should be relevant to the local context, focus on learners, needs and use agricultural and environmental experiences. This form of education is crucial for meeting with our rapidly changing technologies and increasing globalization necessary for sustainable livelihoods and rural economy competitiveness. Abstract: "To teach a foreign language is to teach a foreign culture". In my opinion, it is really bewildering how teachers can teach what they do not know. Accordingly, this study comes to lay a solid foundation for sssthe EFL teachers through empowering them and introducing them to the basic principles of promoting cultural literacy in the EFL classroom. In addition, it will be an indispensable contribution to enrich the cultural literacy bibliography which is limited. In this study, the researcher familiarizes the EFL teachers with cultural literacy and, simultaneously, sets the American Access Microscholarship Program as a model of cultural literacy promoting program in the EFL classroom. What's more, pivotal terms like cultural literacy, Amideast, Access Microscholarship Program will be clarified in detail. The researcher concludes his paper recommending those in charge to adopt this new philosophy in teaching English Language as a foreign language and consider the basic prerequisites in advance.
